Archetypal forms are primary shapes that occur throughout nature from the largest to the smallest of things. There are striking similarities in forms everywhere, and they imply a unifying force (God/Physics/??) that imparts structure throughout the universe. Artists love these shapes because they lend strength of design and concept to their works. The amount of diversity in ideas using these forms, or combinations of these forms, is unlimited. Some of them include: the spiral; the dendrite; the sphere; the radiating line; the wave; and the crystal. Whether utilized on flat planes or in three dimensions, these forms are found everywhere. The next time you take a walk, see how many you can find, or how larger, more complex objects mimic simple archetypal forms. Example: A tree, simplified, is a sphere on a slim cylinder. Inside that sphere is a dendritic subdivision of immense complexity that mirrors itself in roots underground Click here for a gallery of forms in nature.
